The Story

Tunis Village, Fayoum, Egypt · 2026

I went to him for two days. I was silent most of the time. He was absorbed.

For a moment, I felt awkward. Should I speak? Should I ask him something? Should I try to ask the right questions, the ones that make the encounter feel human? I even wondered if he was expecting me to talk to him, or entertain him somehow while he worked. I was silent, but my mind was not.

Then I looked again. He was so lost that, at some point, the pot felt bigger than him. Bigger than me too.

And I think I just stopped trying to make something happen. I watched.
